Join Lawrence Grandpre, Research Director of Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle, in a training for faculty on the use of debate to discuss concepts related to race. We hope that this training will be helpful for faculty using the Community Book Connection text, Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates, in their classrooms this fall semester. Participants in the workshop are equipped with policy debate training that incorporates cultural and racial identity and a developed knowledge of structural social, political and economic issues. In Teaching to Transgress, bell hooks--writer, teacher, and insurgent black intellectual--writes about a new kind of education, education as the practice of freedom. Teaching students to "transgress" against racial, sexual, and class boundaries in order to achieve the gift of freedom is, for hooks, the teacher's most important goal. Join a group of faculty and staff for an engaging and energizing discussion of this text, drawing connections between hooks’ perspectives on education and our own practices in the classroom.
